Statens Serum Institut, Fødevarestyrelsen og DTU Fødevareinstituttet har sammen efterforsket sygdomsudbruddet og har identificeret fiskefrikadeller som årsag. Fiskefrikadellerne er kaldt tilbage fra butikkerne.

SSI har lavet to opgørelser over de seneste fem års udvikling af sygdomstilfælde med bakterierne listeria og STEC. Nye metoder gør, at mange flere udbrud med listeria bliver fundet og opklaret. Samtidig testes flere for STEC, så flere diagnosticeres med tarmbakterien. I 2018 blev usædvanligt mange danskere ramt af alvorligt nyresvigt, som er en sjælden komplikation af STEC-infektion.

Fra marts til oktober 2016 er fire personer blevet syge med præcis samme type af Listeria-bakterie. Den samme listeriatype er også påvist i produktionsmiljøet i virksomheden Delika Aalborg A/S. Virksomheden har stoppet produktionen og tilbagekaldte fredag en række pålægsprodukter efter påbud fra Fødevarestyrelsen. To udbrud af listeria, der ramte i alt 20 mennesker i 2013-2015, blev opklaret med helgenomsekventering som ekstra redskab til den traditionelle smitteopsporing.

Et udvidet program for overvågning af listeria gav pote efter blot et år. Da 41 danskere blev syge af listeria i sommeren 2014 var helgenomsekventering af bakterierne sammen med rutinemæssige interviews af alle patienter med til hurtigt at spore kilden og med stor sandsynlighed forhindre, at endnu flere blev syge. Det er konklusionen i en videnskabelig gennemgang af erfaringer og data, som netop er offentliggjort.
