Udgiver: Dansk Selskab for Infektionsmedicin 2018

. Background. Despite significant advances in prevention and treatment strategies, meningitis continues to pose a substantial global health challenge. The disease burden demonstrates marked geographical disparities, with disproportionate impact in resource-limited settings, particularly within the “meningitis belt” of Sub-Saharan Africa. The global meningitis burden is influenced by a complex interplay of environmental, behavioral, and socioeconomic determinants.

Gram-negative fusiform, non-spore forming rods were detected in an anaerobic bottle of CSF culture obtained from a 50-year-old man who had been hospitalized for meningioma in Tianjin Huanhu Hospital. Although the organism could not be identified using a conventional method, it was finally identified as C.

In this article, we review host and drug factors that influence an antibiotic’s likely effectiveness for the treatment of bacterial meningitis. We also review the preclinical and clinical data in support of or against each of the aforementioned agents for the treatment of bacterial meningitis.

Intracranial devices may be used to treat or guide treatment of increased intracranial pressure in patients with pneumococcal meningitis. European guidelines do not recommend the routine use of intracranial devices in management of pneumococcal meningitis. However, in some countries, intracranial devices are used routinely, but the effect remains unknown.

Human parechovirus (HPeV) infection is increasingly recognized as a cause of severe illness in infants, including sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis, and seizures [1]. In neonates, HPeV encephalitis is associated with white matter injury and neurodevelopmental sequelae [2,3]. To our knowledge, there are only three case reports of congenitally acquired parechovirus infection.

. Abstract. . Background. Bacterial meningitis (BM) is a life-threatening central nervous system infection with potential for severe neurological sequelae. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is known as a late inflammatory mediator associated with lethal pathology. This study aims to investigate the serial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of HMGB1 in children with BM and its relationship to neurological prognosis. .

Neisseria meningitidis (the meningococcus) is a diderm aerobic diplococcus, with a ‘coffee-bean’ shape, associated with life-threatening meningitis and septicemia, as well as pneumonia, septic arthritis, pericarditis or, more recently, urethral infections. N. meningitidis is a commensal organism in the nasopharynx and the throat of humans and is unable to survive outside of the human body. In the nasopharynx, N. meningitidis is engaged in complex interactions with the microbiota.
