Udgiver: Dansk Selskab for Infektionsmedicin 2018

by Sylvie Nguyen, Jeanne Godon, Jean-Paul Pais de Barros, David Masson, Lionel Piroth, Mathieu Blot, Meningotoxemia collaboration group . Introduction Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a major virulence factor during both meningococcal and Haemophilus influenzae meningitis. Pneumococcus does not produce LPS but could be responsible for bacterial digestive translocation as a consequence of sepsis. We addressed this question in the context of pneumococcal meningitis…

Bacterial meningitis is a severe infection with a high mortality rate. In a systematic analysis, it was estimated that there were 2.82 million cases of bacterial meningitis and 318,400 deaths worldwide in 2016 [1]. In North America, the annual incidence rate of bacterial meningitis has been estimated to range between 1.4 and 3.4 cases per 100,000 [2,3].

Purpose of review . We review recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of chronic meningitis, focusing on tuberculous meningitis (TBM), cryptococcal meningitis (CM), syphilitic meningitis, neuroborreliosis, and recurrent chronic meningitis. Noninfectious causes and unique challenges faced in resource-limited settings are also considered. Recent findings . Novel biomarkers are being identified that may be useful for the diagnosis of TBM [i.e…

Abstract . The promising results of the Ambition-CM trial in persons with HIV have sparked interest in treating non-HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis with single 10mg/kg liposomal amphotericin B, combined with oral flucytosine and fluconazole. However, caution is warranted when applying this approach to non-HIV organ transplant recipients, whose immune status may vary due to the effects of immunosuppressive drugs…

It is unclear whether there have been any changes in the epidemiological characteristics of bacterial meningitis during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract . Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) remains the most lethal form of tuberculosis (TB). In 2022, WHO released a conditional recommendation that 6 months of intensified antituberculosis therapy (ATT) could be used as an alternative for drug-susceptible TBM…
